New expert team in the Visual Art Section at the Goetheanum

One of the tasks of the Visual Art Section at the Goetheanum is to create and communicate art in all its visual, tangible qualities. Christiane Haid, the new director of the section, has appointed a team of artists in order to meet the needs of this broad professional field.

Art is a fundamental necessity of life. «Just as the artistic process is a creative process, the perception of art in humans also stimulates creativity and self-examination in the viewer», says Christiane Haid. She is the new head of the Visual Art Section, a task she has assumed in addition to the leadership of the Section for the Literary Arts and Humanities. As a literary scholar, art historian, and painter she is interested in working on the relationship between the individual artistic genres and the human being. This is all the more important since art is beneficial to human health and thus represents a balance to one-sided cognitive-technical activities.

The research areas at the Goetheanum, the School of Spiritual Science, includes the dimensions of art which – as with Hilma af Klint – explore an approach to supersensory realities. To make these accessible in practice, artistic activities and reflections on art take place within the section. In addition, the section will be involved in the design of rooms at the Goetheanum and by autumn will also be establishing studios for artists. The section curates exhibits at the Goetheanum with examples from the artistic and visual work of Rudolf Steiner and other anthroposophically inspired artists. The goal is to make these artworks accessible to a wider public and to convey Rudolf Steiner‘s impulses and suggestions for art and aesthetics. Currently, an art project on the coronavirus is underway, which will be used to create an exhibition at the Goetheanum in the summer.

A team of experts will support section head Christiane Haid in all these tasks, composed of Rik ten Cate (sculpture), Yaike Dunselman (architecture), Barbara Schnetzler (sculpture, exhibitions) and Pieter van der Ree (architecture).

The exhibition ‘Light Leaf and Fire Form’ is a first encounter between Ferose’s iron sculptures and Stephane Zwahlen’s colour studies and ‘word works’. The Visual Arts Section at the Goetheanum has brought the two polar approaches together in a way that makes tangible what lives in the in-between in the works of both artists.

Circular ripples created by an impulse: The Goetheanum shows ‘Concentric Circles’ by Heikedine Günther

From 25 June to 30 September 2021, the Swiss artist Heikedine Günther will show her latest work, ‘Concentric Circles’, at the Goetheanum. The more than 50 oil paintings and monotypes open up a world of impulses and reveal their effect on the surroundings.

Hermann Linde: One Painter – Two Worlds >>> Exhibitions at the Goetheanum and at KunstSchauDepot Dornach, Switzerland

At the end of the 19th century Hermann Linde (1862–1923) was considered one of the eminent orientalist painters of his time. In 1915 Rudolf Steiner put him in charge of the painting of the First Goetheanum’s large cupola. Works from both these creative periods are shown for the first time in two exhibitions.

Metamorphosis inspires cultural impulses > Video series: ‘The First Goetheanum as a synthesis of the arts’

The Goetheanum in Dornach, Switzerland, was intended as a building that would inspire cultural impulses. It was erected during the First World War by people from seventeen nations. One hundred years after its destruction by fire in 1922/1923, experts are discussing metamorphosis as a creative impulse in architecture, sculpture, painting and glass carving.

The exhibition ‘Colour’s Open Secret’, which will be shown at the Goetheanum until 20 July 2022, offers insight into the diverse creative work of the painter Hans Hermann. His work covers a wide range from naive painting to attempts at grasping the sensory and supersensory in abstract pictures to the liberation of colour.

Revealing a previously unseen world: Exhibition with pictures by Margarita Voloshina

The exhibition at the Goetheanum features 20 paintings by Margarita Voloshina (1882–1973). The works from the second half of her life come from the Goetheanum collection, the Rudolf Steiner Archives and two private collections. Works by her husband, Maximilian Voloshin, will also be exhibited.
