Agriculture nurtures human beings, fosters the earth and creates culture. Rudi Bind and Ueli Hurter explore this theme in their book ‘Biodynamic!’ on the ‘birth of biodynamic farming at the beginning of the ecological movement.’
Cows emit methane, a gas that affects climate. This effect does not have to be harmful. From the point of view of biodynamic agriculture, what cows eat, how they are kept and the facilitating of natural cycles can make them carers of land and climate.
Biodynamic agriculture was initiated a hundred years ago, in 1924, pioneering the eco-movement. Today, its dedication to healthy soil and food also provides impulses for a healthy social life. The method is implemented by both smallholders and large biodynamic enterprises.
The Goetheanum Garden Park is being continually developed. Most recently, the dye plant and cut flower gardens were relocated and a pond was created. Benches invite visitors to rest and enjoy the views across to Basel and France.
The exhibition ‘Light Leaf and Fire Form’ is a first encounter between Ferose’s iron sculptures and Stephane Zwahlen’s colour studies and ‘word works’. The Visual Arts Section at the Goetheanum has brought the two polar approaches together in a way that makes tangible what lives in the in-between in the works of both artists.
Between 2023 and 2029, ‘Faust Quartett’ will perform all of Franz Schubert‘s string quartets at the Goetheanum. A Schubertiade two days prior to each concert will introduce dances by Franz Schubert, to some of which audience members can dance with guidance from Barbara Leitherer.
Marion Debus, Karin Michael and Adam Blanning have taken on the leadership of the Medical Section at the Goetheanum. As representatives of general practice, internal medicine, oncology, paediatrics and nursing they cover a broad range in medicine. They advocate active healthcare and the promotion of qualifications in all medical professions.
Human dignity is violated by discrimination and wars. In a project spanning several years, Constanza Kaliks and Peter Selg, leaders of the General Anthroposophical Section at the Goetheanum, are exploring and describing works and contributions in Jewish Humanism.
The earth’s water balance is out of joint. Extreme weather conditions lead to droughts in some instances and to flooding in others. Water itself is not to blame for this situation, rather it is an expression of outer conditions for which human beings are responsible. Jasmin Peschke, head of nutrition at the Goetheanum, points this out on the occasion of World Food Day 2023.
An organism that knows what it needs and that is therefore able to regulate hunger, satiety and appetite is prerequisite to healthy, strengthening eating. Nutritionist Jasmin Peschke advocates developing and cultivating a good relationship to food.
At the end of the 19th century Hermann Linde (1862–1923) was considered one of the eminent orientalist painters of his time. In 1915 Rudolf Steiner put him in charge of the painting of the First Goetheanum’s large cupola. Works from both these creative periods are shown for the first time in two exhibitions.
Family life has largely emancipated itself from external precepts. The need for personal development and reliability cannot be met with new directives. With its annual Family Festival, the Goetheanum creates a space for practical questions around the theme of ‘family today’.
